What is the story you are telling yourself?

No one gets out of this life without trials and challenges. No one. Some people might experience more difficulties then others and yet…when you walk through the difficulties do you hold on to what others have done to you? Do you replay a hurtful event over and over? Do you blame your current circumstances on the actions of others? Do you live in fear of repeating old patterns?

I am not saying that what others have done to you has not impacted you. I have been deeply impacted by the actions of others in my life. I have also come to realize I only have this moment right now to live. When I listen the voice in my head telling me “I should have know better”, “if only this hadn’t happened, everything would be better.”That might all be true and yet we cannot change the past. We made the choices we made and those in our lives made the choices that they made. However, we can use language today to transform the experience of the past.

A true example from my life - I could say I had a horrific experience when my daughter almost died in my arms at 15 months old. Or I can tell you I had a transformational experience of learning. How precious and fleeting life was after I experienced my daughter going into anaphylaxis. I can sit here today and tell you I have more compassion for any parents who walks through a medical event with their child. I can tell you I have empathy for anyone who has had a sudden medical emergency. In one moment everything is fine and then the whole world is turned upside down.

I don’t want to diminish any the painful experiences you have walked through, I am asking you how can you shift the story you tell yourself about your experiences? How can you use them as experiences to serve you now in this moment of your life?

You are a miracle. Thank you for taking time to read my musing for the week.
